He thought things had been going well at the new job, but he manager had just given him feedback saying that he needed to watch his rude language with the departments heads. This made him realize how important modals in English are when communicating politely and professionally.<\/p>\n<p>When he met his friend, Rajesh, for lunch, Sanjeev mentioned the feedback he had received. Rajesh asked Sanjeev to describe how he interacted with his bosses in the office. Sanjeev was positive that his conversations were limited to merely asking them for guidance and pointers on how to go about different projects. This was a perfect example of using modals in English to ask for help politely.<\/p>\n<h2>Using Modals in English<\/h2>\n<p>When Rajesh asked Sanjeev to say exactly how he would ask for help, Sanjeev said, \u201cI usually check with them if they have a minute and ask, \u2018Can you please help me with this?\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rajesh immediately understood and explained to Sanjeev that by using different modals in English . Did you figure out how Sanjeev\u2019s request was translated as rude behaviour in the office? When we want to politely request someone\u2019s assistance, especially if they\u2019re older, or occupy a higher position than us, then we use words like \u2018could\u2019, rather than \u2018can\u2019. (possibility)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: Might I borrow your pen? (polite permission)<\/p>\n<h2><b>Using Modals in English for Requests and Offers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Will\/Would:\u00a0<\/b>Used for making requests, offers, or invitations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: Will you pass me the salt, please?(request)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: Would you like a cup of tea? (offer)<\/p>\n<h2><b>Using Modals in English for Advice and Suggestions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Should:\u00a0<\/b>Used to give advice or make suggestions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: You should see a doctor if you feel sick. (advice)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: We should try the new restaurant.(suggestion)<\/p>\n<p><b>Ought to:\u00a0<\/b>Similar to &#8220;should,&#8221; also used for advice or recommendations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: You ought to apologize for your mistake. (advice)<\/p>\n<h2><b>Modals in English for Necessity and Obligation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Must:<\/b> Used to express strong necessity or obligation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: Students must attend all classes. (necessity)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: I must finish this report by tomorrow. (obligation)<\/p>\n<p><b>Have to:\u00a0<\/b>Used to express general necessity or obligation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: I have to wake up early for work. (necessity)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: They have to follow the rules. (obligation)<\/p>\n<h2><b>Modals in English For Deduction and Certainty<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Must\/Must\u00a0have: <\/b>Used to express strong deductions or certainty about the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: She&#8217;s studying really hard. She must pass the exam. (deduction)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: He arrived on time. He must have caught an early train. (certainty about the past)<\/p>\n<p><b>Might\/Might have: <\/b>Used to express uncertainty or possibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: She might win the competition. (uncertainty)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18.0pt;\">Example: They might have missed the bus. (possibility in the past)<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how to use modals correctly can significantly improve your English language skills.
