Let’s dive in!

Possessives

When we talk about things that belong to somebody, or something, we call it a possessive. And how do we show that something is possessive? We usually add an apostrophe followed by the letter “s” (‘s) to the word which belongs to someone or something. For example, “Prem’s car” or “the cat’s tail.” Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Well, there is a little more to this rule. Let’s look at this in a little more detail now.

1. While using singular nouns

Singular nouns are words that refer to one of something or someone, like ‘woman’, or ‘cat’. When a singular noun does not end with the letter “s,” we add ‘s to indicate possession. For instance, “the boy’s bicycle” or “the dog’s bone. Here, the apostrophe comes before the “s.”

2. Singular nouns ending in “s”

For singular nouns that end with the letter “s,” you have two options. You can either add an apostrophe and another “s” (‘s) or just an apostrophe (‘) after the final “s.” Both are generally accepted, but consistency is key. For example, “James’s car” or “James’ car.”

3. While using plural nouns

For most plural nouns, the apostrophe comes after the “s” that already indicates plurality. For instance, “the cars’ doors” or “the girls’ toys”.” It is important to remember here that the apostrophe comes after the “s” as it shows that the doors and the toys belong to more than one car, or girl.

4. While using irregular plural nouns

Irregular plural nouns, such as “children,” “men,” or “women,” already indicate plurality without an additional “s.” In such cases, the apostrophe comes before the “s” to indicate possession. For example, “the children’s books” or “the women’s rights.”

5. While using possessive pronouns

Unlike regular nouns, possessive pronouns such as “yours,” “hers,” “theirs,” or “its” do not require an apostrophe. The pronoun itself already signifies ownership.

6. While expressing joint ownership

When indicating joint ownership, the possessive is applied to the last noun in the sequence. For example, “Sandhya and Kim’s project” indicates that both Sandhya and Kim own the project together.

7. Individual ownership within a group

When each member of a group owns something individually, the possessive is applied to each noun. For instance, “John’s and Emily’s laptops” suggests that John and Emily own separate laptops.

It’s essential to differentiate between possessives and contractions. Possessives indicate ownership, while contractions combine words, such as “can’t” (cannot) or “it’s” (it is). Be cautious not to confuse “it’s” (contraction) with “its” (possessive).

Understanding the usage of apostrophes and possessives is essential for accurate and effective communication in English. By adhering to the rules outlined above, you can confidently indicate ownership and avoid common mistakes. Remember to use ‘s for singular nouns (including those ending in “s”) and to place the apostrophe after the plural noun when indicating possession. With practice, you’ll develop a keen eye for the correct usage of apostrophes, adding clarity and precision to your writing.
