Should I prepare for a Phone Interview? Why? I’m <\/em>goi<\/em>ng to<\/em> nail it! <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uh-oh. I don’t think so. I’m not discouraging but what makes you think that a phone interview is easier than a walk-in interview? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If not, a phone interview must be taken more seriously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No kidding! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are either in shock hearing this piece of information or you were already  panicking when you started reading this post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t you panic, I’ve got you covered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s have a look at the 10 main tips that are very handy in such situations. I’m going to divide these into three sections so you can panic accordingly (I’m kidding!). <\/p>\n\n\n

These pointers would have given you a gist about what they mean. However, keep scrolling as I briefly run through them on How to prepare for a Phone Interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Pre-Interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1.1 Be Prepared <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are two cases for a phone interview – you know when the interview is or you don’t (Scheduled or Unscheduled).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a scheduled one, it’s easier to prepare for a phone interview than the unscheduled. You know when your interviewer is going to ring your phone, all you have to do is, be prepared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an unscheduled phone interview, attend every unknown call assuming it’s your interviewer. I know, you will already be nervous about this call so, don’t hesitate to negotiate about re-scheduling the call if you\u2019re in the middle of something. They will (mostly)understand but don’t just wing it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take advantage of the phone interview – you are not seen! You can even wear your comfy pajamas if you want to, but this does not mean you can wake up to their call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh god, that’s going to be awful!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wake up early and keep moving. Be brisk and BE PREPARED<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.2 Run a background check <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s always good to know about the organization before attending their interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you do that?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you do when one of your friends starts talking about a celebrity or a piece of news you didn’t come across? You Google it. Do the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make notes about how the organization is doing and mainly what do they do, etc. Do not let the stalker in you take control i.e. avoid sending follow requests or such to the organization’s social media handle the day before your interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.3 No distractions AT ALL <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 By the way, do you have a really cool upbeat song as your hello tune? You do? Then, please deactivate it for some time because some might consider it as \u2018not formal\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming back to the point, no distractions. Not even the email ping from your PC. The interviewer does not want to hear your favourite cartoon or TV show rant in the background. Do not just mute and continue with the interview. Anyone can tell if you are not giving them your complete attention over the phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, lock yourself in a room, feel comfortable. Arrange your resume <\/a>and the notes you have about the organization, lay it out on your desk. Just be sure you don’t make it obvious that you are reading it. <\/p>\n\n\n

2. During Interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

2.1 Listen to them first <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I know a few people who tend to forget what they want to say after a while. So, they say it before they forget, even if it meant interrupting other\u2019s conversations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

*sigh* <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please don’t be that person during your interview. Pay attention and be a better listener. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focus on what they are trying to say or ask you. Have a paper and pen in hand, jot down the points you want to say next or make bullet points of whatever they say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoid taking notes on your PC\/ laptop, you don’t want them to distract with your keyboard taps, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2 Talk steadily <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Remember when I said, “don’t wake up to their call”? Alright. I bet you all have alternatives to contradict my statement. Here’s my counterattack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s say you have everything set before you go to sleep, from having your resume set out to having your doors locked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know how you sound as soon as you wake up? Groggy? Confused?   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This list is even worse for someone who’s not a morning person. So, it’s always better to be on the safer side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, you can wear comfortable clothes, but not your fuzzy sweatshirts and socks that will smother your brain. Try to sit straight\/stand while you talk<\/a>. Do not ramble<\/a>, take a breath and focus on your sentences. Organize your thoughts and speak <\/a>in a steady conversational tone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And don’t forget to smile (appropriately). It’s never too old to feel the warmth from a smiling person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.3 End on a good note <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I know. Ending a conversation<\/a> is never easy, let alone during a phone interview. Urgh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a phone interview, it is tough to understand the interviewer. You don’t get to see their expressions or you won’t know if they have stopped writing so that you can end your explanation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no hack for this, it’s all on you. You have to focus and let your mind do its thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an ending statement, you can use something like this – “It was great talking to you. I am pleased to hear about the job description; it is what I had anticipated. And I’m quite confident about the job. How do we proceed after this?” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can try something along these lines. <\/p>\n\n\n

3. Post – Interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

3.1 A Thank-you mail  <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 
Be cordial and formal. If you can get a hold of their contact, send a thank you mail<\/a> briefly mentioning the date and time and the discussed job profile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not send this email <\/a>as soon as the call is over. Wait for a few hours before you send it, but do it on the same day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.2 Relax<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Are you refreshing your inbox every hour? Rummaging through your spam and every possible folder? Relax and be patient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait for two more weeks before you send your last reminder mail. This can contain the date and time of your interview, also mention that you won’t seek them anymore. It’s important to mention that you are still interested in the discussed job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There… you have done your job. It’s up to them now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.3 Face the truth <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s time to face the harsh reality. There are thousands of people applying for a job amongst them, only two are shortlisted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all seems unfair but remember you are unique in your profession. And there are millions of jobs out there, you just have to find the right fit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You all are probably wondering about the 10th point. Here you go… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO NOT OVERDO IT.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This applies to all the nine points I’ve mentioned above. Don’t. <\/p>\n\n\n

7 Bonus Points to crack your next phone interview!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We, humans, are never satisfied. We’re always curious and confused, just like you are at the moment. I know you still have tons of questions swivelling in your mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why I’ve made a list of bonus tips to prepare for your phone interview! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Begin strong<\/strong><\/h3>
Start your conversation<\/a> with a strong and steady voice. Do not let\u00a0the nervousness\u00a0seep into your tone.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Maintain your voice<\/strong><\/h3>
You may have a great start but many cannot support their voice throughout the interview. Their voice tends to become squeaky or out of energy. Have an eye out for your voice at regular time intervals.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Don’t get eliminated<\/strong><\/h3>
The main aim for the interviewer would be to exclude you from the race. You may or may not get rejected in the forthcoming rounds, but do not make any mistake and give them a chance to eliminate you.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Prepared for personal questions<\/strong><\/h3>
There is a possibility that the interviewer might ask basic questions about your personal life. Do not be surprised at this, be prepared!\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Location-related questions<\/strong><\/h3>
If your job profile requires you to relocate or requires travelling a lot, there is a very high possibility for this question. It’s better to answer honestly rather than answering what the interviewer would like to hear.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Salary talk<\/strong><\/h3>
Research and have a reasonable expectation about your salary package. It is good to have safe and appropriate statements to support your demand.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

Don’t be too optimistic<\/strong><\/h3>
It’s better to keep your expectations low. There is a moderate to low probability that you will advance to the next round. Don’t get your hopes\u00a0high\u00a0and don’t be dejected either.\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
