From cab drivers to corporate czars, English proficiency makes or breaks careers in India today. A 2014 study estimated that those who are fluent in English earn 30-40% more than their peers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Knowing English gives us access to the world, but it is still a big hurdle for many job-seekers. For today\u2019s employers, fluency in English means speaking clearly over the phone, writing great emails, and most of all, being able to speak with confidence in everyday social situations. However, the traditional focus on grammar and accuracy leaves most students ill-equipped to write well or speak fluently. The typical student treats English as a subject \u2013 another exam to pass \u2013 rather than as a language or a skill to acquire and apply.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This weekly column aims to bridge that gap between the English we learn in class and the English we use in the real world. Nobody, and we really mean nobody, speaks perfect English. The interview is not a test of your grammar or vocabulary. It is more about communicating your ideas effectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Second, use simple English and speak clearly in an interview. Speaking fast makes you sound nervous and also makes it hard for the interviewer to follow. Nothing makes you sound unsure like stumbling over a new word.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lastly, understand the question correctly and answer directly. One simple trick to use is the \u201cSamosa Rule\u201d. A good answer should be like a samosa \u2013 a thin and crisp outer layer and a satisfying filling inside. In an interview, the outer layer is a single sentence summary of your answer and the filling is the two or three sentences of details that follow it.
