If you are looking for a job, here is a conversation with a hiring manager who shares three things you need to change about your resume today-crucial insights that help you avoid common resume mistakes and stand out to employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Resume Mistakes You Must Fix Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a hiring manager<\/strong>, I see a dozen profiles every week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each week\u2019s unique and interesting job-seekers blur together. Almost all the profiles follow the same format: objective, experience, education, skills, bio-data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objective statements are uniformly bland, for example, \u201cTo work in a professional results-driven firm where I can apply and grow my knowledge and skills to fulfil organizational goals\u201d, or, \u201cTo be part of an organisation that enables me to successfully implement the knowledge gained in the classroom as well as develop industry-required skills for the betterment of the organization\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All such statements say is \u201cI want a job\u201d and \u201csomeone told me I should put an objective on my profile\u201d. Who wouldn\u2019t want to develop skills and meet goals? Experience, of course, varies from profile to profile, but the experience is rarely the deciding factor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Just List Jobs \u2014 Highlight Achievements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rather, experience is used to qualify in \u2013 does the profile show appropriate roles, some stability, and a bit of progression in responsibilities? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the Beginner’s Guide on Learn English Online<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for education, unless it\u2019s an absolute top-tier school, it\u2019s hard to glean much from the percent marks at an XYZ college. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which leaves the skills. Here too it\u2019s often generic: \u201cFluent in English and Tamil\u201d, \u201cProficient in Microsoft Office\u201d, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These skills are at least testable \u2013 read Tamil, or edit a spreadsheet. Worse are bullet points like \u201cCritical thinking\u201d or \u201cHighly adaptable\u201d. Everyone is looking for adaptable good thinkers. Increasingly, the skills I\u2019d like to see demonstrated on a profile are reading and writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really good reading and writing. Reading: understanding the job description both in content and tone. Writing: using that understanding to craft a relevant story, and creatively showing, with specific examples, how relevant skills were put to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a critical thinker proficient in Microsoft Office applying for a sales role might mention that they created an Excel model to identify which price promotion worked the best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An adaptable worker fluent in English and Tamil applying for customer support might describe the time they took a call from a Hindi speaker, and how they resolved the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stand Out with a Strong, Specific Objective Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A good storyteller should also have no problem coming up with a more interesting slogan for their objective statement. Remember, a profile is just a tool for getting a job interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who would you rather interview, someone whose objective is \u201cto develop in responsibility at a top-tier firm\u201d or \u201cCustomer support tiger and lead blogger (www.myblogexample.xyz), looking to fight bigger fires\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoiding common resume mistakes can make all the difference in getting noticed. By using a clear summary, tailoring your skills, and highlighting real achievements, you present a stronger, more focused resume. Fix these simple errors, refine your story, and give yourself a better chance of landing the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
